The fish market, San Jose

I bake, fry, grill, sear.
He munches, bites, chews.

We talk about food all the time , food brought us together, food is keeping us together and food is something we enjoy day in and day out. We love sea food. We live with an attitude that having great food is our birth right. The perfect place to be on the day when the whole world celebrates love is to dine in a place that will serve: the freshest of fresh fish, mussels, oysters, crabs and shrimp.

Clad in brand new black corduroy blazer, crisp white shirt and jeans, S opened the doors of THE FISH MARKET RESTAURANT, San Jose for me and took my hand. As I stepped through the doors in bright turquoise top and denim jeans, I inhaled a lungful of unexpected smell, salty, fresh, buttery, cheesy ; my nostrils flared. Can you smell sea, S?

He took a peek at the fish market which displayed an array of that day's catch. There were pictures of sharks, fishing nets, fishermen; everything in black ,gray and white colors hung on the walls. The ambiance wasn't out of the world, but it was decent and inviting.

Couple of hours back, I had been flipping through the browser reading reviews about this restaurant and also checking on their menu. I had been planning on what to order: MANHATTAN CLAM CHOWDER, DUNGENESS CRAB CIOPPINO, PASTA CON NOVA,PASTA POMODORO. I didn't even know what they meant.

"Wow. I am loving the menu. I cann't decide which to start with. I want everything", I announced, pointing at the dishes that kept changing in their website. It was 12.00 pm by then. "Go brush your teeth and take a shower" I ordered S and raced to my closet to find a dress that would fit my post pregnancy figure :-)

The bright February rays made the table shine in a buttery glow. There was a bar and sushi spot on the left end and proper seating area on the right side from the entrance. S had made reservations earlier, so we got seated immediately and a friendly staff led us into the seating area. The place was huge , spacious and lay out made it kid friendly. The menus were printed in a huge sheet and was dated 14th Feb, YES. This was our Valentine's day lunch, just S, myself and whispering sweet nothings. It looked like the menus are printed everyday based on the availability of the seafood. We chose the table next to the large glass window.

I always love appetizers, the palate is clean and fresh when we start a meal and exotic flavor would perfectly merge and titillate the tongue. Our bare table was soon filled with warm bread, butter, red clam chowder and warm crab artichoke dip with grilled sourdough bruschetta. To wash them down, we stuck with ice cold lemonade and strawberry martini.

Manhattan clam chowder was tomato based, rich, creamy like potato soup and it had chunks of carrots, celery and onions. The dip had parmesan and mozzarella cheese in it which made every bite irresistible. The bread was well toasted and crispy. We loved it so much that the platter went empty in few seconds. Red clam chowder costs $5.95 for the bowl and crab and artichoke dip for $6.95.

S and his colleague had cioppino with pasta in New Orleans and have been raving about its taste since then. Cioppino has mussels, crabs, shrimp and fish cooked in a tomato based gravy and topped with linguine and Italian cheese, served with crusty bread and a lemon wedge. I had been planning my assault on it from the day he narrated his eating experience. Today, we ordered OUR FAMOUS DUNGENESS CRAB CIOPPINO. The dish was served with a plastic apron, crab eating tools and sanitizing napkins. I mixed the linguine with the gravy and sipped and slurped the sauce that dripped through fork, finger and lips. I relished the sweetness from the tomatoes, mild spiciness from the peppercorns and chewy bites from the cheese. The dish was so filling and delicious. It costs $22.95 + $2.50 for the pasta. It's more than sufficient for 2.

S didn't have mood for dessert but I did. How will Valentine's day lunch end without chocolate? Just to keep my soul satisfied, I ordered chocolate mousse ($6.95). Dessert was so beautiful to look at, a tempting cylinder of smooth chocolate perched on a crumbled dark chocolate cracker, a layer of grated white chocolate on top looked like a mild snow shower on roof top. It was yummo-good and I finished it all by myself. Being V-day, diners were greeted with a yellow tulip at the end of the meal. The waitress was warm, friendly and pleasant. She made suggestions on the orders and made sure that the water and lemonade got refilled immediately. It wasn't a long wait for the food to arrive, about 15-20 minutes. The seafood arrives fresh 5-6 times in a week she informed while re-filling my glass and we have our sister fisheries in San Bruno, she completed . A blackboard displays the list of that day's catch and they are also available for sale, she proudly announced.

Overall, The Fish Market Restaurant is perfect place for couples, family, kids and friends. Anyone with the liking for seafood will fall in love with this place and I am sure that we will go back to taste more of its dishes. I recommend this place for the freshness of the ingredients and for the scrumptious sea food experience.

Total: $62.00 for 2 ( including tax and tips)
